Gift Idea: Cowls

One of my favorite gifts to make are cowls. They're cozy, quick to knit or crochet, and require little yarn while looking expensive. They can blend into a winter coat or add a pop of color to an otherwise drab outfit. Here are a few that I've designed (mostly) this season, with the latest being an ombre cowl for the Joanns website. All are made in Bernat Sheep(ish) by Vickie Howell yarn which can be found at select Michaels, Joann Stores and online for under $4 a ball. You can beat that!

Fader Ombre Cowl for Joann.com
Shown in colors: Plum(ish) and Magenta(ish)
Other color combo options: Robin's Egg(ish) and Turquoise(ish),
Chartreuse(ish) and Olive(ish), or Gin Metal(ish) and Black(ish)

The Mothercraft: Up & Up Dish Pack Review

One of the many great things about the randomness of that which is my career -- craft author, designer, spokesperson, TV personality, mom blogger -- is that companies send me products for review. Most often, it's knitting, crochet or craft related items but sometimes, as is the case today, it's something that's off the crafty radar. Sometimes it's a spot-on (or spot-off, as it were) necessity to make this work-at-home-mother-of-3's life a bit easier. Today, that product is dishwasher soap, namely: Up & Up Auto Dish Packs. (Holding as the glamour of housework washes over you. Ok, let's move on.)

Obligatory Instagram product shot with real, LIVE dirty dishes in the background!

We're a party of five in our household, which means we generate mounds of dirty dishes that often reach epic proportions. Although school requirements often trump chores, loading and unloading the dishwasher is theoretically our 13-year-old son's job. I'm sure it will come as no surprise to you, that he loathes this occupation. Loathes it!  One of his least favorite things about the process (you know, other than the fact that it's work) is when he's unloading dishes only to find that there's still crud caked on some of them which means he has to start all over. Enter the trusty, Auto Dish Packs.

Now, I should pause here to say that the Up & Up brand is Target's private label. Since I loves me some Target I already have many, of their over 1,000 products from this same line in my home. That said, I hadn't tried this one yet, but had high-hopes for these little, particle-removing packs -- as did my son who put them to the test.

Step 1: Loading. It's possible the dishes were rinsed first but really, it's a crap shoot.

Step 2: Dropping in an Auto Dish Pack. No measuring; no pouring; no mess. That's all there is to it!

Results: The kiddo was thrilled because it was so easy. The parental-types were equally happy because the dish packs worked. The dishes were clean which not only meant that we didn't have to waste water re-washing, but also didn't have to hound said kiddo to do the job again. For this household, that's a win-win.

I fear that our dishwasher is on it's last days of life, and so we've had varying degrees of success with other detergents. I'm pleasantly surprised to know that an affordable brand by a company I trust did the trick. We'll definitely keep restocking our cleaning supplies cabinet with these little gems!

Interested in trying the Auto Dish Packs, or any of the other Up & Up household, health care, personal care, baby care or beauty products? Click here for coupons, then head out to your local Target store.

Enjoy!

Vickie

Movie Monday Flashback: Fantastic Mr. Fox

Since I mentioned it in my last Movie Monday post -- and because it's a great choice for family viewing this Thanksgiving -- I thought I'd revisit a MM post from 2010 (only updating the pattern recommendations). Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox is a delightful amalgamation of classic story, off-beat humor and appreciation for whimsy all capped off by creatures in tiny sweaters! Here are a few foxy shots of knitted pieces.

"Mr. Fox" (voiced by George Clooney) Wearing a Ribbed Beanie/Ski Mask

Rat Wearing a Stockinette Stitch, Striped Pullover

"Ash" (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) Wearing a Chunky Knit Cardigan

"Mrs Fox" (voiced by Meryl Streep) Wearing a Basket Weave Jacket

Recommended Knitting:

Alpaca Knit Family Toques, by Bernat Design Team

Craftalong for Sandy Relief!

MAKE IT BETTER: A CRAFTALONG FOR SANDY RELIEF

Many Sandy victims in New York City and surrounding areas are living without power, desperately trying to keep warm. Reports from the hardest-hit areas are that folks are in need of warm garments to make it through--and making matters worse, temperatures in the area have dropped this week. It is really starting to feel like winter.

Two New York-based crafty bloggers, Brett Bara from Manhattan Craft Room & Natalie Soud from A Dose of the Delightful, began to think about what they could do to help those Sandy victims without electricity, heat, or even proper shelter. They knew there had to be a way to harness the power of crafters to help–because if there’s anything knitters, crocheters and sewers are good at, it’s making warm things

So they decided to create Make It Better: A Craftalong for Sandy Relief. The goal? Rally crafters to make warm hats, scarves, blankets, mittens, socks and sweaters–and deliver them to people in need as soon as possible.
Will you join us?

HOW TO HELP
MAKE IT. Simply knit, crochet or sew a warm garment or blanket–items most needed are hats, socks, gloves/mittens, scarves, sweaters, and blankets. Use one of the quick and easy free patterns we found below, or any pattern you like. If you’d like to include other small items to help the relief effort, feel free to donate another warm garment (new or gently used, please). We are hearing reports that general clothing is no longer needed, so please restrict your donations to warm winter items only.

SEND IT. Send your finished item to 9 Thompson Street, New York, NY 10013 as soon as possible (c/o Natalie Soud). We want to start distributing warm goods within a week or less, so stitch something quick and send it off! Our volunteers will deliver the items to various points in and around New York City. (Although we’ll start delivering immediately, we’ll be accepting donations for the near future, so free free to send projects whenever they’re complete.)

CRAFTALONG. Share what you’ve made and help spread the word! Please, please, please blog, Tweet, Facebook, Instagram, and Pin that you’re participating in the Sandy Craftalong as soon as you can (like today!) so that we can get as many hands stitching as possible. Then, when you finish your project, share what you’ve made by posting it on your own blog and on our Facebook page at facebook.com/sandycraftalong. Also remember to use the tags  #makeitbetter and #sandycraftalong

It's finally official: my 7th book, Step It Up Knits: Take Your Skills to the Next Level with 25 Quick and Stylish Projects, is on shelves now! In this book I present all the techniques needed to become an accomplished knitter, plus 25 gorgeous projects. From cabled wrist warmers to slouchy beanies, lacy headbands, and cozy cowls, each project is small enough to take on the go and whip up in just a weekend. Whether it be teachers, office mates or a party host, I've got a little handmade somethin' in mind for your gift-giving needs.
