UPDATE: THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THE WINNER IS:

Grace Hernandez!

Please e-mail your snail mail address to: contests@vickiehowell.com within the next week to receive your prize. Congratulations!

Today's giveaway
is from yours truly-- The UK version of my book AwareKnits (co-written with Adrienne Armstrong), Knit, Purl, Save the World! It's the same book as the US edition, but more civilized. Just kidding; the cover's the only thing that's different. Oh, and this copy's signed by both me and Adrienne. :)

Excerpt from Craft Corps: (Introduction)

"I've been fortunate to make a career from crafting, and one of the greatest gifts it has given me is a sense of true community. I've been privileged to meet (either virtually or in person) thousands of fellow crafters as a result of my profession. Because of craft, I share an amazing connection with people all over the world--people of different backgrounds, religions, philosophies, and creeds. I likely would've never met or communicated with many of these folks had it not been and the explosion in the popularity of crafting. So I take great pride in presenting Craft Corps, a celebration of our unique community."

Craft Corps Giveaway Day 22: Signed Copy of Susan Beal's Book!

UPDATE: THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THE WINNER IS:

Vicki Flinchum!

Please e-mail your snail mail address to: contests@vickiehowell.com within the next week to receive your prize. Congratulations!

Name: Susan Beal

Gig(s):
Designer/Writer

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 16):

"VH: How do you handle juggling craft with parenthood?

SB: It's going pretty well. There are definitely some limits on my time that weren't there before. I'm sure you can relate--there are some days that you don't go outside, or you barely stop to eat because you're busy writing or making something. It kind of consumes your whole life. With a baby, you really do have to become more balanced, even though it's not necessarily restful. It definitely gets me out of my hard-core, deadline oriented pattern. I find it so much fun to take time to play with her when she's just waking up from a nap, and I've gotten something done while she was asleep--then I have her all over again. It's a real treat coming back to her after that break.

It's hard though, saying no to projects. It's been a real gift to be able to contribute to other people's projects, or to do things that are more time and labor intensive, but I've had to say no to some things I wouldn't have had to a year ago. There are some real advantages to focusing on creative outlets outside your own work, like raising a baby and doing things that are more focused on the household."

I Love to Create: Quick Toy Refresh Decals

DSC00109

I've recently been turned on to buying toys from thrift stores. In the past, this was I practice I admittedly turned my nose up at--I mean, I've been buying second-hand clothes and housewares for myself since high school, but for some reason used toys for my babies made me sad. I realized though, that it was only if the toys looked overly tired that it bothered me.

My friend Jennifer clued me in to the fact that you can often order replacement parts from toy store manufacturer's website for super cheap (I got all new accessories for the toy house above for under $7!), and my friend Noelle turned me on to the wonder that is the Magic Eraser which easily rids plastic of scuff marks. Now, the only solution I needed was for fixing the icky, torn stickers that most, thrift-y toys seem to have. So, I came up with these quick-fix, vinyl decals!

Is all of this effort worth it, you're asking? Well, the bigger toy in this post retails for around $80--and when all was said and done, my refurbished version cost less than $20. You be the judge. :)

Materials
Tracing Paper
Oil Cloth or Vinyl
Pencil
Craft Knife
Scissors

How-to Toy Refresh Decals
  • Create a decal pattern by laying a piece of paper over area of toy where torn sticker is; use a pencil trace the needed shape. Cut out paper pattern.
  • Trace around pattern onto oil cloth or vinyl; cut out to create decal.
  • In a well-ventilated area, spray back of decal with Fast-Grab Tacky Spray; press piece in place on toy.
  • Since most stickers on toys go in indented areas, it's likely that the decal will not fit perfectly in its new home. To fix this, take a craft knife and trim off excess.
  • Repeat process for as many decals as desired.

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 28):

"VH: Do you come from a crafty family?

FL: I come from a very creatively supportive family. My mom has been in the natural food industry for my entire life, so for people who think of cooking as crafty, then yes. Neither of my parents ever said no to me if I wanted to try a new creative interest. They were so supportive of that! I think that had a huge, huge impact on who I became. Also, both of my parents are self-employed, so I came from a home where I saw how much work it takes to create your own business and the gratification that can come out of it. above and beyond anything, my parents showed me what I could do with my life."

Please e-mail your snail mail address to: contests@vickiehowell.com within the next week to receive your prize. Congratulations!

Name: Traci Bautista

Gig(s):
Collage Unleashed

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 12):

"VH: You mentioned a former career in Silicon Valley. What did you do?

TB: I started in graphic design, which was my degree, then worked my way through the marketing department. My last job was director of marketing for a software company. I always say that I wouldn't take it back, because it was great training in the business and marketing world.

VH: How would you say that your marketing experience helped in your current career?

TB: I think, tremendously. Marketing is the difference between not being successful and being successful. A lot of artists don't take the time to really put their name out there and market themselves. That's one thing I learned working in Silicon Valley that really helped me: if you want to be successful, it's all about making your name visible. It's the same principal in the art world as it is with a Fortune 500 company--you have to be talented and have a good product, but it's important to market it well."

Movie Monday: The Lovely Bones

I finally got the chance to watch the film adaptation of Alice Sebold's haunting novel,
The Lovely Bones. I know critics raked this one over the coals but, I actually thought it was an engaging portrayal of difficult themes to translate.

Here are a few of the knitted garments from the movie that help paint a picture of 1970's American culture, as the backdrop of unspeakable tragedy.

Saoirse Ronan as "Susie" in the infamous Knit Hat
she wore during her last moments.

Director Peter Jackson, wearing a Pullover in the background of a scene.

Reece Ritchie as "Ray", wearing a Crossed Collar Pullover.

Stanley Tucci as "George", wearing a basic, Crew Neck Sweater.

Recommended Stitching:
Knitty Gritty's Camo Earflap Hat, by Judy Souza
Caron's Crocheted Peruvian Earflap Hat, by Cari Clement

Happy viewing; happing knitting!

Gig(s):
Actress/TV Host/Jewelry Designer

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 18):

"VH: Your Hispanic heritage seems to play a big role in some of the non-craft related projects you take on. Do culture and craft also mix for you?

JG: Absolutely. You know what it is, Vickie; I think it's similar to a discussion I just recently had. I spoke at this lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender event the other night, and this girl came up to me afterwards who count's have been more than 18 or 19 years old. She's a young lesbian woman who is not able to talk to her family about it--she's Chicana--it's a whole cultural thing. And she was asking me sort of the same thing: Do I feel my politics seep into everything that I do? And the answer is yes. I feel like your culture, your politics, who you are--it flavors everything you do.

I'm incapable of making Porterhouse steak; mine's always going to be carne asada. I can learn, but I think whether you're talking about politics or crafting--you're culture, what you value, and what you know are all embedded in who you are, and therefore, reflected in what you do."

Please e-mail your snail mail address to: contests@vickiehowell.com within the next week to receive your prize. Congratulations!

Name: Diana Rupp

Gig(s):
Owner of Make Workshop in NYC

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 20):

"VH: Do people from all over the country come to Make Workshop?

DR: Actually, from all over the world. I've had a lot of Australians lately--they're awesome. A lot of teachers come from there and from Canada. Then, I get a lot of travelers and tourists coming through New York who decide to take a class.

VH: I'm always curious to know if craft is viewed differently by people around the world or around the country. For instance, is it seen differently by people in the Midwest than it is nu people on the coasts? Is it defined differently in Australia than it is in the United Kingdom?

DR: I think so. I was dating a guy who lived in Iowa. In his tiny town of 10,000 people, there were multiple fabric stores and a sewing machine dealership. From my perspective doing a book tour, in certain areas, craft is still something that's handed down to you from your family. I think that's much more true in the Midwest than it is here (NYC). In many countries kids learn how to knit as part of the school curriculum. In Europe, that practice is a little more present. I also think there are certain periods in people's lives when they craft more, like for weddings or when someone's having a baby."

Name: Garth Johnson

Gig(s):
Ceramist & Professor

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 15):

"VH: What's your first craft-related memory?

GJ: My first craft-related memory comes from my mother. She was a schoolteacher and somehow accumulated the world's greatest craft collection in old-fashioned '60's pantyhose boxes. I would have to say our house had a hundred flat pantyhose boxes with diligently sorted craft materials: pompoms, pipe cleaners, cut pieces of paper, yarn, spools from old thread. Mu mother accumulated all these things, and then sorted them carefully; we kids, you know, completely ravished them over the course of childhood and left them a decimated pile.

VH: They were completely made available, and you had free reign?

GJ: Yes, absolutely. So, I've got to give it up to my mother for enabling that level of creativity and letting us be messy, fun, crafty kids growing up. That is easily a debt that I owe, and will pass on to my own kids when they come along."

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 7):

"VH: What's your favorite thing about crafting?

KCM: It's a way to express things that I'm happy about. Because I'm so passionate, I have a lot of highs and lows--crafting is such a strong outlet to release all of that in a visual way. I love making people happy with things I craft, and using bright colors to surprise people and cheer them up. I love that I can make a living from crafting, and it requires coming up with different things and staying a step ahead of what everyone else is doing. Even the time it takes to sit and make something is special. Granted, not everything turns out perfect, but that's the fun of it. When something turns out the way you want it to, you appreciate it more."

Name: Amy Butler

Gig(s):
Amy Butler Design (Fabric, Patterns, Home Decor & More)

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 1):

"VH: Sewing, as a trend, experienced a long dry spell in popularity. Although the overflowing fabric stores that were around when I was a kid are now few and far between, sewing itself, is experiencing a resurgence. What's different, do you think, about this wave of stitchers from the last?

AB: It's interesting, and I really can't quantify this, but I don't think the spirit behind crafting is different at all. I think maybe the intensity and passion might be turned up a few notches. I think about what women's lives might have been like a long time ago. The world is a very different place now. A lot of us raising our families have a passion for craft and might even want to start a business. That's a lot to balance. In almost every household, both partners have work. When I was growing up, my mom and grandmother didn't work, and women crafted for the joy and pleasure of it, but but wasn't a stolen moment. Now, I think women and men who craft have even more passion for it, because it's their sole outlet; it's their stress reliever. It adds so much meaning to life and helps them define it. Crafting is not just a pastime, it's soul food."

I Love to Create: Pin Cushion RIng

DSC00855

A while back I was watching an episode of my friend Wendy Russell's TV show, She's Crafty, in which she wore the most adorable pin cushion ring. I had to have one! They're easy to make, super handy to have and offer yet another way for us to accessorize. For me, that's a trifecta of happy!

I got all fancy and used an adjustable ring blank (there are definite advantages to living a mile away from a jewelry designer--thanks Jennifer, for hooking me up!) to make this one, but a beer bottle cap & elastic would work, too. Either way the steps are simple: just cut, stitch, stuff & glue--enjoy!

Materials
Fabric Scrap
Small Handful of Stuffing
Ring Blank (with channel)
Needle & Thread
Clothespins

How-To

DSC00838
  • Cut an oval of fabric, approximately 4-5 times the size of the ring blank channel.
  • With a needle and thread, sew a long running stitch around the fabric piece, about 1/4" in from the edge.
DSC00840
  • Pull thread so fabric gathers to create a cup shape; add stuffing; pull thread again to close hole. Stitch shut to create cushion.
  • Spread a generous layer of Liquid Fusion in the ring blank channel; insert cushion. Use clothespins to keep cushion in place until glue dries.
  • Remove clothespins; wear the ring; get sewing on your next project!

Name: Jennifer Perkins

Gig(s):
Owner of Naughty Secretary Club/Host of Craft Lab

Excerpt from Craft Corps (Chapter 6):

"VH: Where did your very distinct kitschy, vintage-inspired style come from?

JP: I have had weird taste since I was a kid. When I was in 4th grade, I would wear a derby to school. I had two pairs of pajamas with giant neon numbers on them, because I thought I was Boy George in my color-by-numbers outfits. There was never any jewelry that I wanted to buy, so I just got into making my own. I would always go to flea markets and thrift stores and stuff with my parents. I was always buying weird things as a kid, and making them into something different, and I think that has transferred over into my jewelry. Nothing is safe around me if it sits still long enough--I'll end up looking at it somehow. Right now, I'm sitting here looking at the Fisher-Price apple, thinking it's big, but it could be a necklace.

VH: I've personally had to tell you to step away from a tea saucer--it's too big for a charm!

JP: I'm thinking that if Favor Flav has necklaces that are bigger than that, then why can't I wear that dinky apple?

VH: I'm going to sit you down with Flavor Flav for 30 minutes and not say a word, and you will know exactly why."
